Thirsties Duo Diaper Review and Giveaway!

Thirsties Duo Diaper Cloth DiaperIt’s here! The 29 Diapers Thirsties Duo Diaper review and giveaway! One of my very favorite diaper brands sent me one of their new pocket diapers to test on baby girl, and has agreed to give one of you lucky readers a pocket diaper in your choice of size and color! Now, I would wait by my mailbox for any fluffy mail, but this one I ripped open and threw right in the wash to get it into rotation. Why? Not just because I’m slightly obsessed, but because, dear reader, Thirsties is one of the only diaper brands I know of to have mastered the pocket diaper. At least, allegedly. I still had to put this to the test.

Pocket diapers require you to stuff a terry or hemp insert into a pocket opening between the microfleece lining of the diaper and the PUL waterproof outer shell. Normally, pocket diapers ALSO require you to pull out the wet insert and throw it in the pail separate from its shell when the diaper is soiled, which is a little gross at times. Despite this, pocket diapers are still one of the more popular cloth diaper styles because they offer flexible absorbency: you can stuff whatever you want in that pocket–one insert, two, even a prefold if you want. Thirsties has made pockets even better by leaving the pocket open on both ends so the inserts shimmy out of the pocket opening ON THEIR OWN in the wash. Yup, NO UNSTUFFING DIAPERS. It’s a diaper revolution.

So I pulled my lovely Storm Cloud blue size 2 Duo Diaper in the wash and put it right on baby girl when it was dry. It’s important to put a diaper cover or shell in the dryer at least once before using it, to seal the PUL so the shell is truly waterproof. I probably should have washed the inserts more than once to maximize their absorbency, but we just couldn’t wait. I snapped the terry insert (fast-absorbing top layer) to the hemp/cotton insert (slower-absorbing but super-thirsty bottom layer) at both ends and stuffed my uber-insert into the pocket.

The diaper went on baby girl, and we got a good snug fit. The Duo Diaper fits on her chunky thighs and small waist exactly the same way the Duo Wrap diaper covers do. I had wondered if the Duo Diaper might be a little bulky with two inserts on her. But from the outside, the Duo Diaper looks just like a Duo Wrap with a prefold–trim and snug-fitting. So far so good.

Baby girl wore the diaper for two hours on our first test day, and it gave me peace of mind to know that her pocket diaper had leg gussets just like her diaper covers, in case she made a big mess that needed containing. She didn’t make a mess, though (she’s a kind soul), and we took the diaper off, fastened the velcro tabs to their laundry tab backings so they wouldn’t stick to other diapers in the wash, and threw the whole diaper–inserts and all–into the pail in one piece. Fingers crossed!

Thirsties Duo Diaper InsideYup, the inserts really did come out of the pocket in the wash, and even though I left them snapped together, they half-unsnapped themselves and got completely clean. We did a little “rinse and repeat” of this step, and the insert shimmied out of the shell and got completely clean every time I washed it. Nice. Next up was a nighttime test. This sleep-deprived mama had to work up the nerve for that one, because she already has a fool-proof nighttime diapering system in place and isn’t a fan of nighttime crib leaks. But it had to be done! Diaper went on baby at 1:30 am, and when she woke up to nurse at 7:30 am, no leaks. Whew! Baby girl wets the same amount between any two feedings regardless of the time elapsed, so this was the best night test I could give the diaper. If she had slept 10 hours in one stretch, I’m pretty sure the result would have been the same.

Honestly, the only even slightly negative thing I can think of to say is that it takes a little extra check to make sure the pocket liner edges are tucked inside the shell both in front and back, where normally that would only be an issue at the back, but this is something that would become habit to check, just like making sure a prefold is tucked inside a cover at the legs. Also, eventually there will probably be a snap version of this diaper, and I’m not sure that would be as good a fit on chunky thighs as the velcro. I was recently advised by a diaper shop staffer that I might not like the new snap version of the Duo Wrap because there is only one row of snaps, which fits skinnier babies best, or babies with equally pudgy thighs and waists. Baby girl has extra-luscious little thighs, so two rows of snaps are best to allow us to angle the fit at the waist. So, if you have a pudgy-pudge like I do, you may prefer the velcro version of this diaper, but that just means more colors and prints to choose from. because Thirsties always releases new colors and prints for the velcro diapers first. :) You can oogle out the full line of Thirsties diapers and accessories here.
