The ribbon details on Kim's diaper covers are one of a kind.
*Note*: Oops, I’m so sorry! It’s actually a MEDIUM-size cover that Kim donated for this review, so that means it will fit more babies longer. I apologize for the mix-up! I will fix all the info below but wanted to let you know that it’s not your imagination if you already read this post and are now confused. 
It’s time for another 29 Diapers review and giveaway, this time with a bonus. This time we have not only a new diaper cover for one lucky reader to try–sewn by Etsy seller Kim, who runs the Kdbspace Etsy shop–but also an interview with Kim, telling us more about how she got into sewing her own diapers. Kim sent me a large orange diaper cover with adorable yellow flower print ribbon details to test. My favorite thing about this cover, other than the fact that it comes out of the washer and dryer looking brand new every time, is that it has very deep leg gussets, so that I don’t even really need to check to make sure baby girl’s prefolds are tucked inside. They always are, which makes this a quick cover to get on in a hurry.
We first tested the diaper at home (I’m such a chicken!) but had no leaks from wet diapers. Then the diaper passed my heavy wetter nighttime test with flying colors, so then we waited… and waited… for baby girl to have a big blowout and see how the cover handled it. Finally IT happened, and the cover held it all in, just getting a slight stain on one piece of elastic on a leg gusset, but no poop on clothes. Hooray! Thumbs up. This cover goes into regular rotation, replacing my Thirsties Mango cover that developed a PUL tear (I REALLY work my orange diaper covers hard, I’m telling you, so that’s not the fault of the cover). The one thing I missed from my other diaper covers was laundry tabs, because if you have a really big mess it’s a little awkward to toss out the prefold or fitted diaper underneath the cover and then go back and re-fasten the velcro tabs in front before throwing the cover in the pail, but that’s a relatively minor detail.
Deep leg gussets that will never let you down.
I would suggest this diaper most for babies who have average to thin thighs, because on baby girl’s super chunky thighs (you really have to see these ham hocks to believe them!), the edges of the waistband bunched up a bit in order to get the waist tight enough without the leg elastic leaving marks on her thighs, but it still fit her well enough to prevent all leaks.

29 Diapers: Hi, Kim! Could you tell us a little about yourself and your family?
Kim: I am a mom to 3 children Ages 8, 6 and 2 and a wife to my wonderful husband Rob of almost ten years! We homeschool our 2 oldest children.
29 Diapers: I heard you’re living on a sailboat and sewing the diapers using green energy! Can you tell us more about that?
Kim: We decided to cruise on our sailboat after my husband got laid off his job almost a year ago. We sold our house and small piece of land and bought our boat. We anchor our boat away from land, so we use only our wind generator and one solar panel for all our electricity. It feels good making a my diaper covers with “green” energy!
29 Diapers: How did you get into cloth diapering, and what made you decide to sew your own?
Kim: I grew up around lots of children; I was the second oldest child and my parents took in foster children. My mom put cloth diapers on us and some on the other children in her care, she used BIG pre-folded cloth diapers. I was never impressed with the whole cloth diaper thing (I was also young with not much of a clue ), so when I was expecting my first baby, it was NO WAY! And same with my second baby. I guess I was a bit turned off by them.
Well, when I was expecting my third baby, we needed to save money any way we could, and when I was at my midwife’s office I saw an ad for cloth diapers and a light bulb went off in my head! I thought, “I’ll just buy some cloth diapers; they look a lot better than any of the ones I have seen before,” but when I got the brochure sent to me I quickly decided that cloth diapering was going to cost me a lot of money to buy them. When I was looking at them I thought, “I can sew, I’ll make my own diapers!” So this is how I got started on making my own diapers and diaper covers!
29 Diapers: Where do you get your patterns for sewing your diapers?
Kim: I had a cousin that was making her own so I called her and she sent me her pattern (she made AIOs), and I found some free patterns online for a basic idea and just played with it until I had one of my own (my baby had lots of diapers that all fit differently). I ended up with a fitted cloth diaper that had elastic in the back and around the legs. I like to pin mine on, so I made them to pin on. Then I took my diaper pattern and made my diaper covers off that. I like the gussets around the leg. I didn’t even try to make any with out the gussets; to me they NEED a gusset.
I made some All-In-Ones too, but I didn’t think they were that great. I had trouble with wicking and I don’t like wetness around the legs, so I ended up only using the fitted with a diaper cover to keep in ALL blowouts and wet diapers!!
Now I’ve been sewing and selling my diaper cover wraps for over 2 years!!
29 Diapers: How many versions did you test before you found one you could use on your babies and sell to other mamas?
Kim: I didn’t know very many people with babies, but I made some for a lady from my midwife’s office. I made some really cheap because I wasn’t sure how other mama would like them. She told me what she liked and didn’t like and we kind of worked together on it, and I had my baby to test them on and I talked my sister to use them for her baby. I gave some away to a friend, too.
After many trials and errors, I decided it was a great product and decided I wanted to sell them. I chose only to sell my diaper covers because I didn’t think I had time to sew the diapers, too.
And after I started selling them I got really good feedback, so I decided they were good for other babies, too! So I guess I didn’t have too many babies to go by before I started selling them.
29 Diapers: Do you have any advice to share with other moms who are considering sewing their own diapers?
Kim: I bought flannel sheets and receiving blankets to make my first diapers; they make really good diapers because the flannel is thicker. This made making my own diapers so affordable! I decided they are maybe a bit hot so then I bought birdseye fabric that is cooler and is a diaper fabric. I used the scraps of birdseye and made my own nursing pads, too! Very economical!
If anyone can even sew a little bit, the diapers are way easy and I encourage you to make your own too! It’s neat knowing you are sewing these little diapers just for your own new baby!
