BumGenius recently announced that they would be retiring the 3.0 pockets from the lineup. Gasp! What?! These are some of the most popular pocket diapers on the market, so those of us with nothing better to do than drool over fluff have been holding our breath to see what new product they would roll out shortly thereafter.
Well, the new 4.0 diaper lineup is here, and I suppose for the most part it’s positive improvements–but this depends on your diapering preferences and needs. The biggest changes are:
1) non-organic one-size diapers are now available with snaps. Great for mamas who don’t like velcro wearing out on them. It remains to be seen how this will affect fit, though.
2) The diapers have more “generous sizing” to allow them to fit larger babies longer. That’s great, as my friend who has a full stash of only BumGenius was frustrated by how soon her daughter outgrew her 3.0 pockets, but BumGenius is already teetering on the edge of not fitting size small babies, much less newborns, so this might make that problem worse. Small babies might not want to count on BumGenius to diaper them from birth to potty training, at least not in the one-size diapers. The extra small diapers are still great for newborns, but that’s a whole separate set of diapers to buy.
What do you think of the new lineup? Have you bought any yet? I’d love to hear your thoughts on the changes.

I definitely think it’s exciting to have the snaps. I was a little disappointed that the new color options are all pastels – I go for more BRIGHT colors!
oh well.
As far as fit – I guess it depends on how they worked in the extra – if the extra fit still snaps up to the same “small” size as before I guess it COULD work. But I know what you mean, I couldn’t start using my BG 3.0′s until my baby was about 3 months b/c they were so huge they leaked on him. I guess I’ll have to try one out soon! Thanks for the post!
Hi Julie,
I also love bright colors. I remember hearing that the dye in the tab fabric on the brights ran in the wash, but I’m not sure if this was the reason they discontinued the brights or if they just weren’t as popular as pastels. I’m hoping they bring them back too, or do prints!
They announced on their Facebook page last night that the brights would be coming back, but they didn’t have a date set for it yet. I never had any of my brights bleed in the wash, so I don’t think all of them did that. I’m not big on pastels either, but I am excited about snaps!
I think the hype was kind of overdone. As long as they kept the velcro option, I’m fine with it. I’m glad the bright colors are coming back. The new colors look kind of boring to me. I guess I’m just not that thrilled; I don’t think they did anything phenomenally different or new, so I think they should have just told us they were upgrading the 3.0s instead of making such a big deal about it and panicking people…but I guess that was the point.
The dye in my flip diaper brights ran. But they warned of that and said to wash it 6 times by itself. But the dye didn’t run on my AIOs. I definately wish they had more primary colors for boys. But I was going to be upset if they didn’t have snaps! I pre-ordered a snap 4.0 with my survey coupon. I can’t wait to try it out! The aplix is the only reason I don’t have more BG. I love them, but I love snaps more. I love that they have the double snaps (like the flips). The flips fit great, and I saw on FB that they fit like flips. I know a lot of people are disappointed, but most people aren’t really sure why! They just hoped it was something really neat. Not sure what they wanted the diaper to do! I know a lot of people wanted prints, but most of the diapers that have prints are more expensive (or just the ones with prints are more expensive). The 4.0 is still only 17.95. Not too bad for a great diaper with 2 inserts and snaps! I think the changes sound great! I can’t wait to get my diaper (even if it is pastel!).
They also are offering a different hook&loop closure AND making the elastic very easy to replace. Both of which are great and all, but I personally prefer snaps, and am super glad that they decided to add these to the new diaper.
I did read on their FB page, that the bright colors are coming back. (at a not yet released date)
I’m glad that they came out with new colors, but I don’t see myself buying any of these. With babies, diapers get dirty easy and quick. (even the outside, lol) I don’t buy pastels and ALWAYS go for brighter colors. I will be buying one of the new 4.0s but not until the brighter colors are brought back. I sooo was looking for a print in the lineup…maybe next time!?!?
I loved the brights too, but they have announced the the brights are coming back, and that they are starting some prints too!
Oh good! I love love love prints.
Yes, I also go for brights for the looks as well as the fact that they never look grimy. I LOVE my Happy Heinys cow print snap diaper (perfect fit for baby girl, high quality, good absorbency with trim fit) but the white never stays looking white. Maybe I should “Rock a Soak” on that one.
You’re right, the price is hard to beat.
