You guys know I love Thirsties products, including their Duo Diapers. But because baby girl is a heavy wetter, I’ve never worked up the courage to put her in a Duo Diaper overnight. Unless a pocket diaper is double-stuffed with a hemp insert, I just don’t trust it to last the night. But the Duo Diaper insert is a combination of terry and hemp, so theoretically it should last better than just a terry insert for night-time diapering, right?
Well, I’m not one for experimenting with an already perfect system, so until this Night Diaper Event, I was loathe to risk a night accident just to see how the Duo Diaper held up. So… I received a beautiful Alice Brights size 2 Duo Diaper in the mail, washed it, dried it, and jumped in with my eyes closed. Baby girl was suited up in her Duo Diaper, and we were in for a night of 3 nursings and no diaper changes. Fingers crossed.
Guess what? All night. No leaks.
This is great for two reasons:
1) The Duo Diaper insert shimmies out in the wash, so you don’t have to unstuff a soaking wet insert before throwing it in the pail. This is the reason we normally use covers and prefolds overnight, because it’s not much fun to unstuff an overnight diaper insert. So, I threw the soaked Duo Diaper in the pail in one piece, nice and neat, and it came out of the wash (in two pieces) perfectly clean.
2) This means that there is a trim diaper you can use during the day AND at night with no modification, simplifying your stash. It’s still trim and comfy for baby, it still has leg gussets to prevent blowouts, and you don’t have to make sure you always have clean day diapers during the day and clean night diapers reserved for night. One diaper, 24 hours a day.

A front AND back pocket opening mean you can throw a wet Duo Diaper in the pail without unstuffing it.
Now, I have to note that one of the snaps holding the two-piece insert together popped off in the wash, but when I notified Thirsties of the defect they promptly replaced the insert. I verified that they have the same policy for all their customers, so if you ever have a similar problem with one of their products, they will stand behind it.
