The Poopy Pinchers Relay (Or, How Do You Get Those Solids Into The Toilet?)

Cloth Diaper Sprayer, White

If you use the sprayer, how do you get that diaper in the pail without dripping? Gross, I know, but someone had to ask.

There is one facet of cloth diapering that has this admittedly lazy momma stumped, or grossed out, or something. How do you get semi-solid poop off a diaper, into the toilet, and then get the diaper in the pail with a baby in one arm or screaming at you from the Pack n Play? Not my favorite part of cloth diapering.

Some people swear by diaper sprayers, which I probably should try if I’m going to set myself up as an expert on cloth, but I haven’t gotten around to it, and it does seem to require one more hand thanĀ  I usually have free.

Other people use a “poopula,” or a plastic spatula dedicated to scraping diapers that hangs next to the toilet. Again, not totally sold on that option.

And then there are those of us who just work our washers extra hard by throwing anything less than completely solid poop straight in the pail. Yup, I admit it. I have to clean my washer more often than I would otherwise, but it seems to work… except I do have residual stink issues when the poop is really flowing, no big surprise there.

What are your techniques for winning the poopy pinchers relay? I’m open to new ideas. :)

I put my LO in his crib or on the floor to play and sometimes I give him a toy. If he cries, then it is only for a few minutes. I use a diaper sprayer. I put it immediately into the wetbag. I wash my hands, then I go get (or rescue if he’s crying) the LO.

When we end up with a semi-solid poopy diaper, I just leave it in the diaper folded in half (to enclose the stink) for a bit. The insert in the pocket pulls some on the moisture out of the poo hopefully making a non-plop-able into a plop-able!

Hey, I have the sprayer. Awesome! …as long as you keep it in the bowl (I have accidentally sprayed my face in sleepy moments!) Great for cleaning those little potties when your oldest is training too. Solid isn’t and issue (they just role out), it’s the runny/squishy ones this is great for. Suck it up and wring it out! Fold the wet diaper so you are only touching the outer part and not poo. Lay it on the counter if you don’t have a free hand. I keep natural bamboo cleaning wipes in there and give everything a quick swipe afterward anyways and you are going to wash your hands regardless, right? Big deal then. Besides, what mother hasn’t gotten poo on her hands at some point. Trust me, potty training (especially a boy) will present you with way worse than this. Get a wet bag for the bathroom door and you are set! You will thank yourself, especially once your husband gives it a whirl, I promise!

A wetbag for the bathroom door sounds like a good idea. Thanks for the tip, Tammy!

I think part of my problem is that I usually use prefolds, which makes semi-solid poop less “plop-able.” The fleece lining of pockets usually lets go of the poop right away, making it easy to get in the toilet even with one hand.

    Heard of the diaper duck?

I haven’t really tried mine because I don’t use prefolds that much – but that’s what it’s best for. Instead I’ve been favoring my poopula (97 cents at Walmart) and diaper sprayer. Definitely worth getting.

As far as baby control – yes, you can leave the diaper folded on the bathroom floor and take care of later. In our small apartment, we have a baby gate at the bathroom door because the baby has the run of the rest of the house – so he will just stand there at the gate and watch me as I take care of it (social guy).

I guess I’m too cheap and old-fashioned. I got hand-me-down Gerber prefolds 5 years ago and bought 2 packages of the standard Gerber plastic pants at Wal-Mart. I didn’t know there were other options. I wasn’t really taught how to cloth diaper, so I winged it! I started with my two year old, so it was mostly ploppable. I just inverted the diaper over the toilet, and then when flushing (after the solid has gone down) I dipped the diaper in the swirling water which pretty much washed away any leftover. Push against the side of the toilet to rid the diaper of extra water and right into the bucket next to the toilet. I always wash my hands, and while it’s gross, I didn’t know any better and it worked. Three years later I am on baby number four in my house and am using those same hand-me-down diapers, but have invested in 3 velcro diaper covers, making it a bit easier to remove the poo with less mess. While my little one has less ploppables, I still use the “swirly method” to clean the poo. Works for me!
