I was just scavenging for some deals for you guys and ran across an old blog post that linked to an awesome site with FREE instructions on how to sew your own cloth diaper stash, whether you want flats, prefolds, fitteds, pocket inserts, pull-on wool covers, wipes, or even a wet bag! I’ve never seen so many instructions in one place, so if you’re considering sewing a part of your stash, this might be a good place to start.
The best part is, this site, Fern and Faerie, teaches you how to use old clothing from your wardrobe or a thrift store to make the diapers, so you can save a bundle on cloth AND make super cute prints for your diapers. The site even factors in the cost of thread to tell you the true cost of sewing each kind of diaper, so you know they’ve thought through the cost of each part of the stash they’re teaching you how to make. I’m not much of a sewer, but this website really has me tempted to try my hand at making a fitted diaper, or at least a prefold. I have a whole bag of old sheets and shirts lying around that I could turn into some great diapers using these simple instructions.

If you have a t-shirt or pajama pants with artwork or a pattern on them, the possibilities really are endless for creating beautiful fitted diapers.
The reason this site caught my eye more than the usual diaper patterns website is also that the diapers are so cute. An old plaid shirt can be made into a super-cute prefold, and a university t-shirt makes an awesome diaper insert or fitted–with the logo of your alma mater right on the bum. So if you’re considering sewing your own diapers to save money, check out Fern and Faerie. Happy Friday, everyone!

It appears the patterns on that website are no longer free, but for sale.
This website, http://www.zany-zebra.com/free-cloth-diaper-patterns.shtml, has tons of free diaper patterns.
Hi Tara,
Thanks for that other link. Most of the patterns on the site are for sale, but that one page has multiple patterns and instructions for free.
I love this blog come across all the time when i google free diaper patterns. just got to get the sewing machine in order
Love this – I have been wanting to try to sew my own for a while but have to get all the materials together!
this is so cool! once finished with work, i’ll be awfully tempted to give this a go!
I’m not sure if this post pushed me but today I got to make my first fitted diaper. It’s totally ugly but I’m so proud of myself seeing as it was my first practical sewing project.
I had attempted to start at the beginning of this week but got jammed when I couldn’t thread the machine.
