Introducing 29 Diapers’ Contributing Writer Katie Wadland!
My name is Katie and I’m a full-time Mom and part-time Physical Therapist and love everything going on in my life right now. My daughter, Kyla Brynn, is four months old and we live with my husband, Jason, and our dog, Snoop, in a beachside community south of Boston, Massachusetts. My favorite part of being a mom so far is watching my daughter change and grow each day and I’m trying to raise her to be a happy, healthy and cloth-diapered little girl!
Smartipants Cloth Diaper Review
On the first day with my new OS Smartipants pocket diaper, I set out with all good intentions of testing the dipe systematically and scientifically: I put it on my baby girl Kyla first thing in the morning, and planned to check it every hour until it leaked. Kyla, however, had other plans and decided to take it for a poo test-drive right out of the showroom. I was actually pretty impressed; I wouldn’t call this one a particularly epic poo, but it was certainly a fair, poop-shooting-up-the-back type of challenge, and the diaper did quite well. Nothing on the clothes, nothing leaked out the sides. So far so good.
I tried it again after the next wash, and it did all right with pee. It did leak after about 3.5 hours, but I usually change her around 3 hours anyway. The third time I used it, I just changed her at the 3-hour mark and it was fine.
Since the diaper only came with one “Smartsleeve” insert, I think performance could definitely be improved by addition of a doubler, or a second Smartsleeve insert if the company would include two (please do!).
The pocket liner is very soft and washed really well without staining. I thought the fit was great for my daughter; the legs were snug but not too tight, and I actually preferred only one line of snaps at the waistline–I always struggle to get the second row snapped in most of my other diapers anyways. However, I think the greatest asset to the diaper is its slim fit. I have some pocket diapers that I can leave on her practically all day without leaking, but then struggle to fit her pants over her huge cloth-diapered bum! The Smartipants diaper is definitely the closest fit to a disposable I’ve seen and it comes in a variety of bright colors that look adorable too.
All in all, this diaper is a good price for a pretty decent diaper ($14.95 per diaper, 3 for $36.95 or 12 for $144.95 according to their website), probably not the best for a very heavy wetter, but seems to do the job just fine for my baby girl.
