Ecoist Upcycled Newspaper Purse Review
I have loved seeing the upcycled product market take off over the last few years. After all, 29 Diapers was founded to help new parents discover that they could raise a baby with safe, high-quality, stylish products while sticking to their budget. It’s that same kind of sweet spot of affordability, eco-friendly materials, and fair trade that got me excited about Ecoist handbags. Plus, I’ve been feeling like a bit of a sheep lately, buying whatever purse happened to be in fashion, and Ecoist offers a creative alternative that won’t be out of style by next year. For this review, Ecoist sent me one of their newspaper purses, which is a purse made of woven upcycled newspapers covered in cellophane, with a cloth and metal zipper closure and rubber handle. You may know my career has taken me through the throes of the news and publishing industry changes over the past few years, so a newspaper purse in particular seemed meaningful and fun to me. Ecoist makes several lines of this type of handbag in different sizes and styles. My newspaper purse seems to be made of news from China and Peru, which is pretty cool, but you could also get a handbag made from candy wrappers, magazine pages, or even upcycled aluminum drink can tabs (I love this silver satin-lined evening bag!). This means whether your style is bright or neutral, shimmery or basic black, you can find an Ecoist bag that will work for your wardrobe. My other mission here was to find a smaller purse I would use, since most current fashion leather purses are large and hurt my back: Ecoist makes a variety of sizes and styles of purses, so a smaller Ecoist bag might make a good errand-running alternative to your tote bag that has the kids’ snacks and diapers in it.

I love the Ecoist site – they’re so creative and eco-friendly! I think my favorite item is the Every/Any – Dove Chocolate. A person would have to look (at least) twice to realize this bag is made from chocolate wrappers. I also like the Cuff Bracelet – Confetti.
